Cooling off...

One of the best sights in the wild is Tiger cubs with mother cooling off at a water hole..

Road Block

Tiger on the Road :)

Indian Skimmer

Finally managed to get some nice images of this mating pair.

Red-headed Vulture

Though very shy, it came down to drink water and gave us an opportunity to make some cool images.

Spot Bellied Eagle Owl

Also known as Forest Eagle Owl.. This is a Juvenile sitting outside its nest while the mother was calling from a distance..

Blue Tailed Bee Eater

Mysore Outskirts near river Cauvery.

Ashy Prinia

He decided to show up a bit late.. Thankfully the light was still holding up :)

Blue Throated Blue Flycatcher, Female

A very beautiful species

Asian Fairy Bluebird

Finally after a long long wait...

Road Block

And what a road block that was.. She decided to sit here for a few minutes before crossing over. That also gave chance to her cubs to cross from behind her

Collared Kingfisher

Finally got this beauty close and on a clean perch...

Brown Winged Kingfisher

Bhitarkanika

Black-Capped Kingfisher

Finally - All the hard work and patience paid off. It was intense test of patience as we had to move very slowly without any movement or noise.. This guy is otherwise very skittish and moves off at the slightest of noise..

Verditer Flycatcher

Found her on a clean perch in great light..

Closeup of a Gorgeous Lady

Had a lovely time with this gorgeous lady that morning. Getting her this close was a treat as she is otherwise very shy and in her last few days of pregnancy..

Pied Kingfisher, Female

Finally got her on a clean perch after going there for many many weekends...

Morning Glory

Tiger, morning golden light and a yellow grassland... This truly was a dream come true. This was a dream location since I first went to Tadoba 5 years ago. This beautiful lady, known as Choti Tara made a special appearance on my birthday eve.

Spot Billed Pelican

She flew straight into me while collecting nesting material floating on the water.

Appayar Tower Male

Sometimes we do multiple safaris with no sighting and sometime you get a cat this close for 45 minutes with no other vehicles around you. You surely feel blessed when such a thing happens - You are also tensed not to mess it up (technically) as the light is low and you can only get to so much ISO for a sharp enough shutter in the fading light.

Greater Flameback

Very lucky to have sighted this beauty at Kabini.

Queen from Kabini

Wow, what a day that was and all thanks to Afsar for his skills and experience of tracking a big cat.. No wonder, he is known as the "Billi Catcher" of our leopard capital. As we entered our designated safari route we saw a herd of deers very alert and both Afsar and I tapped the vehicle for a stop. We then heard the roar of a tiger and knew it was around.. Afsar then asked Khan-bhai (our driver) to go back a little and then we saw a wild boar making funny noises.. These clues for enough for Afsar; and after going back a few more meters, we found this beauty sitting boldly by side of the road barely 15 meters away from the jeep.. Oh boy, what a sighting that was :)

Spot-Bellied Eagle owl

aka Forest Eagle Owl and extremely rare to find this beauty in our forest. Very luck to find one in our last trip to KGudi. Very late in the evening with low light conditions.

Show Stopper

Big Male Leopard of Kabini

White Rumped Shama, Female

Dream bird on a dream perch, Can I ask for more?

Territory Marking

Spent over an hour photographinc this lovely dominant male of Kabini. He was hiding in the grass for a while then got up and walked up to scent mark this tree and eventually climbed up a high tree to snooze off :)

Small Blue Kingfisher

My luck with Small blue KF continues.. Got it again on a very clean perch and very close.

Bluethroat

It took me a long long time to get a decent image of this beauty. It was far and the image is cropped quite a bit.

Sarus Crane

Finally got one of these reasonably close for a 600mm lens.

Black Redstart, Male

Asian Pied Starling

Finally got this species on a nice clean perch..

Leopard in a rainy morning..

Kabini again!

Urban Wildlife

Spotted Owlet: Saw this guy (and a few others) happily perched in these overflow drain pipes very close to the main road near my house.

Malabar Trogon, Male

He did come out after all the wait and perched in the open. How I wish he chose a better (clean) perch, but hey, I'm not complaining atall.

Rose-ringed Parakeet

Malabar Trogon, female

Finally got her on this auspicious day - She more than made my Diwali very happy and colourful.

Common Kingfisher (Common Blue)

Lucky to have got this species (one of my fav) so close and in perfect conditions (Nice light, gerat perch, awesome BG etc., etc).. It was a special moment and opportunity as this guys usually does not let you venture so close... I felt blessed :)

Long legged Buzzard

Tiger Cubs

These are Rajbehra cubs. I saw them in May 2013 when they were about a year old.

Laggar Falcon

Enjoying a hard earned breakfast made of a Spiny-Tailed Lizard. The open ground outside the Tal-Chapar sanctuary is the place where these lizards are found in huge numbers and these raptors feed on them.

Laggar Falcon

Portrait shot of this beauty. These are very active and very fast raptors making it difficult to get close and make pictures. I was lucky the other day though it was on a high perch ;(

Malabar Trogon, Male

This guy was very shy.. it took us more than two hours of waiting before he came out on an open perch

Booted Eagle

Very shy as of now... Did not allow me to get any closer.. This was clicked against a very bright but cloudy sky.

On the rocks !!

Getting him in the morning golden light was a treat.

Long legged Buzzard

Another raptor from Tal Chapar

Tawny Eagle

Spend a few minutes with this beauty that morning at Tal Chapar, Rajasthan.

Southern Grey Shrike

Lucky to get close to this otherwise very shy bird.

Bay backed Shrike

Black buck

Black buck in the grasslands of Tal Chapar.

Leopard

Sometimes, you would not if the Leopard is on the tree, unless it decides to check you out :)

A bold cub

This cub was wanting to cross the road to get to the water, saw our jeep and sat down for a while.. We moved our jeep back and witnessed a graceful walk by this beautiful young girl.

Indian Blue Robin, Male

Summer Landscape

Tiger in Kanha Meadows..

Leppy in the greens

A quick sighting wherein this guy came out of the bushes and crossed the road right in front of our vehicle.

Indian Silver Bill

Inside the JLR Bandipur Campus

Serpent Eagle

On a perch concentrating for food..

White Throated Kingfisher

This was clicked during a boat ride in Ganeshgudi..

Lady on the Prowl..

This graceful lady from Telia walked across the dam before she crossed in front of our vehicle and disappeared in the thick forest..

Rajbehra Cub

One of the Rajbehra cub walked with two others for quite a distance to drink water. They were coming after eating a fresh kill and you can notice blood stains from the kill on his nose and elsewhere on his face. These cubs are about an year old.

The season of Dance

It is so much fun to be in the jungle during monsoons. The forest is green, moods are upbeat and the overall atmosphere is in a celebration mode.. A dancing Peacock is the icing on the cake :)

Sloth Bear

This guy happily posed for me and gave me the opportunity to make some nice snaps.

Bamera Male from Bandhavgarh

I was delighted to see him after hearing stories around the fight, his injurues and the territory limitation.. He seems to have recovered well though not 100% yet. We hope he recovers fully and wins back his territory from the new mystery male. There are a bunch of cubs under threat and he needs to provide them protection.

Bamera Male, Bandhavgarh

One of my favourite Tigers. He walked with us that day for over 4 Kms.. It was simply awesome!!

Tickell's Blue Fly-Catcher

KGudi is a magical place and getting such beauties out there is given :)

Tiger Portrait

This guy is known as Mukunda Male and is a beautiful young Tiger. He is seen often in the Bandhavgarh's Khitouli zone.

Pheasant-tailed Jacana

Bamera

Had a good time with him as he walked with our vehicle for over 10 minutes... I was glad to see him in good shape and he looked as majestic as ever ; he is recovered well though he is still limping a bit. It was an awesome sighting for sure!

Indian Pitta

Patience paid off, waited for over an hour and finally this guy perched very close to our vehicle and allowed me to make a few images from close distance. The Indian Pitta is a small stubby-tailed bird that is mostly seen on the floor of forests or under dense undergrowth, foraging on insects in leaf litter. It has long, strong legs, a very short tail and stout bill, with a buff coloured crown stripe, black coronal stripes, a thick black eye stripe and white throat and neck. The upperparts are green, with a blue tail, the underparts buff, with bright red on the lower belly and vent...

Tiger closeup

I love this guy - and for multiple reasons; he is super bold and gets very close to your vehicle if he has to cross the road (one example), he has a big territory and is seen at places far from each other, he is always in fights and comes out winner (I have lot of his pics with some injury or other) and most of all his grace and confidence.. He truly is the charming prince of Bandipur :)Edit

Thirsty Big boy..

He crossed the road cautiously before getting down the Mahaman and drank a truck load of water.. He then rested there for a while before jumping into the bush and dis-appearing.

Wild Dog

The magical main road of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve.. I have seen Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear and wild dogs right on the main road there.. Here is a Wild dog walking across gracefully.. It was like a fashion parade :)

Tiger

Tiger

This is Rajbehra female from the summer of 2009... Looking forward to see her again this summer with her cubs :)

The menacing looks....

A big dominant male but very shy.. we were so lucky to spend some time with him :)

Green Vine Snake

It was fun and challenging to click this guy and getting a frame like this (Did get some more tight frames; later).. I was shooting with a 105mm macro and was very close to the snake and certainly in the striking range.. Though the snake is non-poisonous, the bite is usually very nasty and painful. The trick was to keep the snake's attention on another guy (our naturalist in this case) while I could get some close up shots with detail. I got pretty close too (to get the details of the eye etc; will post later) which he did not like.... I moved out just in time and narrowly escaped the strike :)

Indian Openbill

A small break in between a busy morning of nest building.. It was great fun to see them collect nesting material, wash them in water, fly out to carefully lay the material and also take some break to drink water.

Tiger at Kabini

A lot of waterholes in Kabini and Bandipur are running dry this season with very less water in the river too.. We all pray and hope for an early and healthy monsoon this season.

Male Leopard

B2 from my archives

Though I have seen him a very few times, he is been my all time favorite and perhaps the most sought after Tiger of all times. The confidence with which he would walk without caring about the jeeps on the road and the way the jungle would shake up and shiver when he is on a prowl is something very unique about him.. He was a guy very difficult to click or make images as he would never ever bother to look at you, no matter what you do or how close you get... I have once seen him walk between two jeep with barely any space but he never lifted his head to look around... The entire jungle however knew the king was on a prowl... he is one who was truly mesmerising :)

Dark Fronted Babbler

One of the most super active birds at Old Magazine House..

Yellow Browed Bulbul

Lucky to have got him in an open clean perch in the morning light.

Malabar Pied Hornbill

Ruby Throated Bulbul

A very shy bird, it took over 30 minutes of watching all around before he decided it was safe to come down for a drink..

Black-Lored Tit, Male

An awesome morning spent at Ganeshgudi... The lighting condition was very challenging and therefore a lot of learning too.

White Rumped Shama, Female

Very happy to pose for the camera :)

The Queen of Bandipur

Close up of this gorgeous girl on one beautiful morning.. Posting this amidst rumors that she was killed by another male Tiger in a territorial fight - Not sure if she is no more, but I like to be optimistic to see her in my next trip to Bandipur.

Road Block

One from the archives... Made this image a few year ago at Bandhavgarh. This road was known as "Alu Bonda" road which is closed for tourism since the Jhorjhura female died in a tragic accident.

Scarface

As we were rushing out of the park around the close time, this guy was waiting for us o the main road... Had not seen or photographed a Leopard for a while and I mentioned this to my friend, this guy showed up - AS if he heard me and was just waiting to say Hi!. It was simply awesome and we made some cool images in low but golden light which was fading away fast ....

Inquisitive Cub

Walked straight towards our jeep for a quick inspection...

Leopard

Shot in the fading light, very late in the evening.

Spot-Billed Pelican

Tadoba Tiger

The Katezeri Male of Tadoba

Telia Cub, Female

Tiger, Bandipur

On one morning safari, we got dis-appointed as we saw the track full of pug marks and we new we missed a tiger; to add to our sorrow, the jeep ahead saw a cub near a waterhole not far from there.. We decided to go ahead a wait and saw a leopard cross the road in hurry (no pictures).. We followed the alarm calls but to our surprise, this tigress came out and started walking on the track.. After a while she scent marked this tree, turned around and gave us some amazing looks. It was surely a very thrilling sighting..

Grey Headed Fish Eagle

Sarus Crane

Worked hard and searched for these beauties for 2 full days.. Finally got them on day 2 evening in the tall grass. They are usually there because of the small chic and this is the best view I could manage..

Flame Throated Bulbul

Paradise Fly-Catcher, Male

Finally got this guy in the open after dreaming about a frame like this for years.. It was a tensed and exciting moment chasing it for a while this morning.

Sand Piper

Tiger, Kabini

Scaly-Breasted Munia

It was amazing to see them spent nearly all day in collecting nesting material. This gave me some predictability and choice of spot for some closeup pics.. It still took me over two hours of waiting but was lucky in the end, I guess.

Leopard

Tiger, Kabini

Wow, what a day that was and all thanks to Afsar for his skills and experience of tracking a big cat.. No wonder, he is known as the "Billi Catcher" of our leopard capital. We had no luck in the 1st three safaris and this one began no different with no clues or calls and as we entered our designated safari route (cant give the exact location as it may help poachers) we saw a herd of deers very al ert and both Afsar and I tapped the vehicle for a stop. Oh boy, what a sighting that was :) This sighting is the most precious Diwali gift ever.. Thank you so much Afsar and wishing you all a splendid Diwali :)

House Sparrow (Male)

Its become so difficult to see these birds now a days. The urbanisation has taken its toll on these beautiful creatures who will be on the endagered list soon..

Lady of the lake

Male at Charkawar Dam, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Just back after a quick trip to Bandhavgarh - Saw this male late in the evening under very tricky light. He just walked across the bund giving us a good 2 minute sighting very late in the evening. We had just about enough time to get back to the gate within the stipulated time.

Tiger - Mukunda Male

This guy is also known as the "Adiyal Male" from the Maghdi zone at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, and was frequently seen between the charger point and Mahaaman dam. We were lucky to find him here and then he walked with our gypsy (and 3/4 other) all the way to Mahaaman dam where he drank a truck load of water :)

Asian Koel Female on a dream perch. Title as suggested by Sai Adikarla The Asian Koel is a large, long-tailed, cuckoo at 45 cm. Though a very common bird, they are often heard than seen and are very shy. The male of the nominate race is glossy bluish-black, with a pale green or grey bill, the iris is crimson, and it has grey legs and feet. The female of the nominate race is brownish on the crown and has rufous streaks on the head. The back, rump and wing coverts are dark brown with white and buff spots. The underparts are whitish, but is heavily striped. They are very vocal during the breeding season (March to August in South Asia), with a range of different calls. The familiar song of the male is a repeated koo-Ooo. The female makes a shrill kik-kik-kik... call. Calls vary across populations.

Indian Cuckoo

Very elusive as they normally perch very high on the tree and calls from there making it very difficult to spot them. This one gave me a sighting for a few seconds when it came down sheepishly to the water hole to quench its thirst and then sat on the fallen tree for 3-4 seconds. I love the call of these beauties as it sounds like "One More Bottle".... "One More Bottle"... which by the way is the ringtone on my phone ... LOL

Malabar Gliding Frog, Male

Rhacophorus malabaricus (Malabar Gliding Frog)

ODKF - The Jewel of Konkan

ODKF, The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca) also known as the Black-backed Kingfisher or Three-toed Kingfisher is a species of bird in the Alcedinidae family. This is a small, red and yellow kingfisher, averaging 13 cm (5.1 in) in length, yellow underparts with glowing bluish-black upperparts. This is a widespread resident of lowland forest, endemic across much of the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The preferred habitat is small streams in densely shaded forests. In the Konkan region of southwest India, it begins to breed with the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in June. The nest is a horizontal tunnel up to a metre in length. The clutch of 4-5 eggs hatches in 9-10 days with both the male and female incubating. The birds fledge after another 9 days and a second brood may be raised if the first fails. The young are fed with geckos, skinks, crabs, snails, frogs, crickets and dragonflies. Known as the "Jewel of Konkan" as it nests in that region and the sighting is good after the first south west monsoon showers. One needs to travel all the way to the western ghats to capture this tiny jewel and it requires loads of patience and perseverance. We used to wait there from 8AM to 6PM inside our hide with pounding rain, dark clouds and low light conditions. But end of the day, a glimpse of this rainbow coloured beauty would refill our energy levels and make the entire experience very sweet :)
